GRIMSBY — It’s not often the Jamie Stevens finds himself writing the cheques.
As president of the Grimsby Benevolent Fund, Stevens has done his fair share of accepting funds from community groups, corporate sponsors and regular citizens. But on Monday morning, Stevens had the distinct pleasure of signing away funds that will help the community in perpetuity.
A little after 9 a.m. on Feb. 3, Stevens rounded up the staff and volunteers at the Grimsby charity to make an important announcement.
“The directors of the Grimsby Benevolent Fund announce a gift of $25,000 to the Niagara Community Foundation to be held in perpetuity in the Grimsby Community Fund,” said Stevens to a cramped room holding roughly 40 people — from volunteers and supporters to members of founder Mike Barretto’s family. “The gift will be pleased in the Grimsby Benevolent Fund, an endowment fund where capital is invested and the earnings will support programs and services in Grimsby, provided by many different charities.”
